Mexico may not yet be known for its wine, but the country’s Valle de Guadalupe is home to some of the oldest vines in the Americas, as well as the first woman-owned and operated winery in Mexico. It also boasts a new generation of young winemakers coming into their own and producing unique expressions, such as wild pet nats, blood orange aperitifs and dry-farmed esoteric wines.
While Margaritas and cerveza are the common drink pairings for tacos, Mexican wines make a great match as well. The experts at Nossa Imports, sommelier husband-and-wife duo Dale and Stephen Ott, share some suggestions for Mexican wine and taco pairings.
This balanced wine comes from the first winery in Mexico to have a female head winemaker. Combining bright acidity, baking spices, rich and ripe red fruit and well-integrated tannins, this wine is ideal for pairing with roasts of lamb, beef, or goat — or all three — in your barbacoa taco.
The first of its kind in Mexico, this fortified citrus wine is produced with fruit from the orchards of the legendary Rancho el Mogor. An orange wine in the sense that it is a wine made solely from a variety of different oranges, which is then lightly fortified with grape brandy. This aperitif is lightly bitter and sings in a spritz.
The wine is made from 100% palomino fino grapes, a warm-weather varietal from southern Spain, which is most commonly used in the production of vinos de Jerez. Produced by ancient dry-farmed bush vines without chemical intervention, it pairs well with Baja fish tacos spritzed with lime.
