Ardbeg The Abyss

Islay distillery Ardbeg today announced the release of The Abyss, aged 34 years.

This whisky originates from a previous release: the limited-edition Ardbeg Corryvreckan, launched in 2008.

To bring The Abyss to life, American comic-book artist Tradd Moore reimagined the legend of the Corryvreckan whirlpool in a graphic novel. Set on “Planet Ardbeg,” it is available in print exclusively with The Abyss’s 400 numbered bottles.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan contained 1989 spirit aged first in bourbon casks, then finished in French oak casks. These casks were heavily toasted to an exact specification. While most of these unrepeatable casks were consumed in the 2008 limited bottling, a small handful were stowed away. Now, from those last surviving barrels, comes Ardbeg The Abyss.

Flavors include toasted marshmallows and tea leaves, according to the distillery, with notes of dark chocolate, pecan, leather and creosote.

The whisky is named after the whirlpool that lies to the north of Ardbeg’s Scottish island home.

Ardbeg The Abyss will be available to buy via Ardbeg.com, at the Distillery Visitor Centre on Islay, and through the Moët Hennessy Private Client channel, across the world from June 2024.

The suggested retail price is $27,500 per 750-ml. bottle.

In celebration of the Ardbeg Corryvreckan’s role in the distillery’s liquid history, 1,000 limited edition bottles of core range Ardbeg Corryvreckan will also release, featuring a label design by Moore. Four individual designs will be available, each taken from a frame featured in The Abyss’ graphic novel. These unique bottles will be available exclusively from the Distillery Visitor Centre on Islay from June.

This follows the release of Ardbeg Spectacular.
