Juneteenth Desserts by Britney Brown-Chamberlain

By Britney Brown-Chamberlain

I make red desserts every year for Juneteenth, the holiday that commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and officially freed enslaved people throughout the state. The color red is a symbol of enslaved Africans who died, and I love that I have the freedom to express myself in modern times while honoring those who paved the way for me.

Red Velvet Tuxedo Cake

I make a red velvet cake every year, and this is my new favorite version! Called a tuxedo cake because of its alternating dark and light layers, this recipe is a showstopper. It’s perfect for any celebratory event but also a delicious treat that is truly ice cream’s best friend.

Strawberry Meringue Pie

This pie has a buttery, golden graham cracker crust that cradles a lusciously smooth strawberry curd filling topped with fresh strawberries. The fluffy and delicate layer of meringue melts in your mouth and gives this pie a beautiful velvety texture. Each blissful bite is a blend of fruity strawberry perfection, making this pie an irresistible treat.
