The big interview: Allaster McKallaster, Scottish commentator

It’s the Euros and it just so happens that we have collaborated with a Scottish sporting hero to release a new That Boutique-y Whisky Company Expression. Almost as if we know what we’re doing. I mean we largely don’t to be honest, this was probably just a coincidence.

Anyway, here it is: Blended Scotch – The McKallaster Edition (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) 50cl.

Yes, it’s Scottish commentator Allaster McKallaster who has graced our latest label. The man who boasts over 60+ million views on Instagram (I had a picture that got 92 likes once, I get it dude) and who reminded the Spanish that the Scots are not afraid to batter anything, including their football team

The story of McKallaster and the whisky

We were lucky to grab a few words from the man himself, but first here’s Dr Whisky and the man behind the malts of TBWC, Sam Simmons, to talk more about the collaboration and what to expect from the whisky.

“We are pretty lucky at Boutique-y where we can bottle whiskies of any type from anywhere in the world and we can stick just about whatever we want on a label, so the question is, why NOT Allaster McKallaster? He is a perfect caricature and to a certain degree, that is kinda what we do at TBWC: whisk(e)y caricatures with hand-illustrated labels. Pete is a buddy of ours and although I am not a massive sports fan, when I first saw his videos I pissed myself as the caricature was just perfect, loud, a bit inappropriate, and just good fun”.

And what of the liquid in the bottle? “With a character like McKallaster, there was an initial idea to make something BIG AND LOUD but then we thought it might be more fun to try and make the kind of whisky a guy character like McKallaster might drink. We felt that the great blended Scotches of the 1970s would be what adorned Allaster’s home bar so we have aimed for a gluggable, three-fingers, on-the-rocks, lets-watch-the-footie, style of whisky… without the addition of e150 spirit caramel that may have been present in those latter-day brands we took inspiration from”.

The McKallaster Edition

The big interview: Allaster McKallaster, Scottish commentator

Question: How did you end up on a whisky label?

Answer: Lots of fans have been asking what I taste and smell like. This seemed easier than meeting them all.

Q: What do you think of your whisky?

A: Like Scotland in 2023, this whisky would batter all other whiskies.

Q: What’s the best whisky to swig while commentating?

A: I don’t mind as long as it costs less than 30 quid.

Q: What’s your favourite whisky memory?

A: Opening a bottle of McKallaster. I don’t remember anything after that.

Q: If this whisky had a Scottish accent, which region would it be from?

A: North Southglasdeenburgh.

Q: Snog, shag, marry: your whisky, Scott McTominay, the Russian Linesman from the 1966 World Cup.

A: Mrs. McKallaster won’t let me answer that. But my whisky for all three.

Q: What’s your favourite piece of commentary? – This could be your own or somebody else’s.

A: I’m not aware of any other commentators.

Q: What is the best thing about Scotland, and why is it whisky?

A: Me covered in whisky.

Q: What will you do if Scotland wins the Euros?

A: I think you mean “when”. I’ll be on the Berlin Wall celebrating with the Tartan Army and a bottle of McKallaster, of course.
