Whisky is a drink for summer. We promise. We know, we know. You’ve been told it’s all fireplaces and cigars. Winter warmers and cold remedies. Men in kilts and stags bracing windswept Celtic landscapes.
But whisky is more than one thing. It’s full of summery flavours. Tropical fruits, coconut, citrus, banana… so why not put it in a Piña Colada? Let Highballs be your new G&Ts. Sip it neat on a beach. Add ice. Go nuts. It’s your whisky.
That’s why we’ve created a list of whiskies for summer, to help you find your new favourite and throw off the shackles of stereotypes and conformity. These are whiskies to enjoy. To kick back with. To share and to spoil and to mix and to match to your heart’s content. Throw away any notions you have and let whisky be what it was always ultimately meant to be: fun.
A blend of whisky from The House of Suntory’s three distilleries: Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita, Toki is a Japanese whisky crying out to be used in Highballs. So do yourself a favour and embrace the great refreshing tradition of whisky and soda.
It’s all in the name for Beautiful Fruit, which boasts so much elegant, fruit-forward character. Think stone fruit, lemon zest, and tropical tang. A beauty and a bargain to boot.
We’re going to prove that peated whisky can be summer with the classic Laphroaig 10 Year Old. A really smoky, iodine-rich sipper, it also makes a cracking Paloma. Simply fill a highball glass with ice, add the whisky and top up with grapefruit soda then drink away in amazement. It’s a summer BBQ in a glass.
From Sweden’s Mackmyra Distillery comes a single malt whisky inspired by the golden hour in the French countryside and it’s an appropriately mellow yet flavoursome single malt, perfect for enjoying on a warm evening.
Great whisky will taste great whenever you drink it and to prove that point, pour yourself a dram of the sublime Wormtub 10 Year Old. I bloody love this whisky and I can’t think of an occasion that wouldn’t be improved with a sip.
A French whisky made in Cognac, Brenne French Single Malt Whisky has a very singular character, think strawberry laces and slick vanilla, which makes it an ideal summer sipper.
A 12-year-old single malt that’s teaming with a beautiful, waxy, orange citrus character, Deanston is a Scotch you can sip or make a nice Old Fashioned with.
Crisp, green apple and delicate citrus star this blended Scotch whisky from Loch Lomond that can be mixed with all kinds of fizzy drinks (ginger ale, cola, lemonade – all good) but is also delicious when sipped neat.
Here’s another whisky made to be mixed up, The Club, which we recommend topping with apple soda and garnish with a slice of fresh ginger. Lovely.
Coachbuilt Whisky is known because its co-founder is Formula 1 racing driver Jenson Button but the blended Scotch whisky is more than just a celebrity spirit, it’s a genuinely well-composed whisky that also shines in a Highball.
