England has a long and often dark history with rum, dating back to the colonial period in the Caribbean and extending to the Royal Navy’s tradition of issuing daily rum rations to sailors, known as the “tot.”
But today English rum is all about bright new brands, distilleries creating rum from scratch and experimenting with various styles and ageing techniques, contributing to a renewed appreciation for English rum. Here’s a few standouts we particularly like.
Kentish rum from one of the country’s smallest distilleries and our neighbour in Tonbridge. Greensand Ridge ferments its molasses and distils it in a column still to create a very smooth fruity rum that is then aged for 6-10 months in bourbon barrels to impart that beautiful golden colour.
Two Drifters in Devon create carbon-negative rums by fermenting 100% molasses and distilling the spirit twice in pot stills. It’s a flexible and fab rum from a distillery that is at the forefront of environmental practices.
Scratch Rum is one of the most innovative producers around, distilling from scratch in Hertfordshire with experimental use of maceration and vapour distillation. This example is infused with an array of foraged British botanicals, collected seasonally.
From the Portsmouth Distillery comes an aged rum, matured for three years in bourbon casks. It’s worth reading about the way this distillery operates from its historic building by the coast.
This is the first batch of rum From The London Distillery Company to be bottled by That Boutique-y Rum Company! This captivating white rum hails from the heart of England’s capital, crafted by the skilled team on Druid Street. The label even features an illustration of The London Distillery Company’s Druid Street location.
A proudly funky English rum, this colourful creation was fermented with the world’s first wild trinity yeast and distilled in the DropWorks Distillery in a bespoke double retort still, the first of its kind in England. It was bottled at a hefty 63% ABV and the brand tells us that Funk Drop is designed to “make your Daiquiris go nuclear, your Hurricanes rage and your Zombies come to life”. Sounds good to us.
The Retribution Distillery in Frome, Somerset is another making excellent rum from scratch. Here we have an unaged, pure single rum fermented from 100% molasses and double pot distilled to give it a uniquely smooth and warming body and an impressive biscuit-sweet finish.
