The Old Fashioned Rules At 40 Under 40 Reception

Younger people really like the Old Fashioned, at least that’s what we saw at our first 40 Under 40 reception at the Cheers Beverage Summit/Beverage Alcohol Retailers Conference (BARC) in June in Schaumberg, IL.

Held at the City Works Eatery and Pour House — an 8-unit chain from Chicago’s Bottleneck Management — the reception celebrated the inaugural 40 Under 40 class. Honorees came from all tiers of the beverage alcohol industry, including suppliers, wholesalers, off-premise retailers, on-premise operators, mixologists, technology providers and more.

What did these young guns drink? When it comes to cocktails, by far the top order was the Burnt Orange Old Fashioned. Next was the Espresso Martini, followed by the regular Old Fashioned, the Spicy Margarita, and Casamigos Blanco tequila and Ginger Beer.

For spirits, Tito’s vodka was the number-one order, then Maker’s Mark, Johnnie Walker Black, Casamigos Blanco tequila and Russell’s Reserve 10 year old bourbon. The top five beers ordered were Hopwell First Pils, Dovetail Vienna Lager, Alter Hopular Kid, New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze, and Off Color Apex Predator. Surprisingly, not too many people drank wine at the reception, but the top call was Tortoise Creek cabernet sauvignon.
