The Master of Malt Whisky Championships 2024 winner is…
The winners of our inaugural 2021 championship are once again the victors after you came out in force and voted them as your favourite. You do love your Bunna, don’t you?
The beautiful Bunnahabhain Distillery
Who is our winner?
Bunnahabhain (pronounced boo-na-ha-ven) is a beloved Scotch whisky distillery located on the northeastern coast of Islay, Scotland. It’s known for its distinctive style of whisky that differs from the typical heavily-peated, smoky single malts that Islay is known for, instead producing sweet, rich, mostly unpeated whiskies typically aged in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, characterised by flavours of honey, fruit, ginger, and nuts with a coastal influence.
The distillery was established in 1881 by William Robertson and the Greenlees Brothers, who chose the location near the Margadale River to gain access to pure spring water. The name “Bunnahabhain” actually comes from the Scottish Gaelic “Bun na h-Abhainn,” meaning “mouth of the river,” reflecting its proximity to the river and the sea. Anyone who has been there (I count myself as one of the lucky ones who has) knows that it’s a gorgeous whisky-making site and well worth a visit.
Bunnahabhain is known for its signature 12 Year Old expression which forms the heart of a fantastic core range that includes Toiteach a Dhà, Stiùireadair, and the 18 Year Old, 25 Year Old, 30 Year Old, and 40 Year Old single malts. The Islay distillery is also known for its excellent cask strength series, top-notch experimental cask releases, peaty Mòine (pronounced Moi-gna) whiskies, and its Islay festival editions.
The quality and consistency of its whisky, the passion with which that whisky is made, the beauty of its distillery, and the wonderful people behind the malt are all reasons why Bunnahabhain appeals so much to whisky lovers. Everyone who voted will have their individual grounds for doing so but suffice to say, none of us at MoM Towers are surprised when the votes flood in for Bunna. It’s a worthy champion.
