The Story Behind the Recipe

I wanted to share a Halloween snack board that had some healthy options for school parties, kids’ Halloween parties, etc. And the truth is, I love a good cutesy themed food.

That’s it! That’s the story!

I know these Clementine Pumpkins hardly warrant a recipe. But sometimes it’s fun to share a cute idea, along with a few tips and tricks for successful execution. And so here I am!

Why You’ll Love Clementine Pumpkins

They’re cute, they look like pumpkins, and they’re adorable in Halloween snack displays! What’s not to love?!

Ingredients

Clementine oranges: Also known as cuties, tangerines or mandarin oranges. I think the smaller, easy peel oranges are the best for these orange pumpkins because they make an easy handheld snack, you can fit more on a board, and they look awesome!

Celery: Chopped bits of celery make the “stem” of clementine pumpkins. You can add a few leaves if you want, too. These orange pumpkins are your oyster! Or something like that.

Adaptations/Variations

Extra fancy tangerine pumpkins: Use a paring knife to peel as much of the pith off as possible, especially between segments. This will make the oranges look more segmented, kind of like pumpkins that have individual lobes. You can also tuck a celery leaf in with the “stem” for fancier tangerine pumpkins.

Tangerine pumpkin Jack o’lanterns: You can also leave the skin on and instead draw jack o’lantern faces on the oranges. Just make sure they’re dry and use a sharpie. You can even poke a hole in the top and add the celery stem to these tangerine “jack o’lanterns!”

How to Make Clementine Pumpkins

All you have to do is peel your oranges, cut your celery into small pieces, then plop a piece of celery into the top of your tangerine.

Arrange on a platter and your tangerine pumpkins are done!

Tip for Success

Wrap them well if making ahead of time – Peeled oranges can dry out easily, so if you’re prepping ahead, make them a max of one day ahead of time, and keep them in the fridge completely covered.

Clementine Pumpkins

Ingredients

12 clementine oranges1 stalk celery

Instructions

Peel your oranges.
Cut your celery in half lengthwise, then slice into 1/2-inch wide pieces. You can also cut your celery however you want to make the stems exactly how you like them.
Insert celery into the tops of your oranges like a stem. Ta da! Little tangerine pumpkins!
Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. You’ll want to cover them very tightly because they can dry out quickly.
