Wine 101: Red Blends Revisited and Updated

Throughout history, the majority of the world’s most famous wines have been blends — just take a look at regions like Bordeaux, Champagne, and Chianti. In the U.S. though, red blends only started popping up on the market at the turn of the 21st century.

Unlike our European counterparts, there are no concrete rules for what grape varieties can go into domestic red blends. Many producers don’t even list the grapes going into their respective blends, making it difficult for customers to navigate the category. But now, American winemakers are becoming more transparent, listing the grapes used and the percentage of the blend each accounts for.

On this episode of “Wine 101,” Keith revisits American red blends and discusses how the category has evolved as of late. Tune in for more.
