Natterjack Irish Whiskey has announced that its once-limited expression The Mistake is now a permanent part of the brand’s whiskey portfolio.
A production mishap, the expression resulted from whiskey that was accidentally left in 46 of the producer’s Virgin American oak barrels for an extra year. Soon after its release, The Mistake received positive attention for its heavily oaked flavor profile, tasting similar to bourbon, the company says.
“What started as an error became one of our most celebrated releases,” says Aidan Mehigan, CEO and founder of Natterjack Irish Whiskey. “We’ve always believed in pushing the boundaries of traditional Irish whiskey, and The Mistake truly embodies that philosophy. It’s a nod to our roots but with a bit of rebellion.”
The Mistake has hickory BBQ and toasted walnut aromas, the company says, followed by singed cinnamon and seared orange zest. Sweet almond then gives way to leather and grain. On the palate is vanilla bean, followed by anise. Oak is joined by warm molasses, toffee and a hint of a Granny Smith apple.
The Mistake will now be available year-round in select markets and through official retail partners. It can also be purchased online at shop.natterjack.com.
Bottled at 46% ABV, this whiskey has a suggested retail price of $49.99 per 750-ml. bottle.
