Other than a brand name, a critic-given score is one of the first things a customer comes in contact with when shopping for wine at most stores. Not too long ago, these scores were the maker or breaker of a winery’s success, but do they still hold the same weight in 2025? Well, it depends.
For the average consumer shopping at Total Wine, scores are often the deciding factor between one Cabernet Sauvignon or another. However, those who are deeply passionate about wine are generally wise to the fact that these scores only reflect the opinion of a single wine professional, not a collective. And perhaps consumers need to take them with a grain of salt.
On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach respond to a listener question: Do wine scores and reviews still move the needle? If so, what are some of the wines that benefit and the places where scores matter? And if not, what’s changed? Tune in for more.
