Bar Louie Bought by Sun Holdings

Through its affiliate Louie Restaurants, multi-brand franchise organization Sun Holdings has acquired the gastropub chain Bar Louie out of bankruptcy. Addison, TX-based Bar Louie had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past March, after closing dozens of underperforming locations nationwide.

It was Bar Louie’s second bankruptcy in five years. The company, which at its peak operated 134 restaurants in 2019 and now has 39 U.S. locations, had filed for Chapter 11 in January 2020 prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bar Louie, which celebrated its 35 anniversary this year, emerged from that bankruptcy within six months after secured lender Antares Capital LP purchased the company. Despite efforts to improve operations and revamp the brand, higher costs and increasing macroeconomic pressures, among other factors, halted Bar Louie’s comeback and led to the second bankruptcy filing.

Founded in 1997 by Guillermo Perales, Sun Holdings provides management services to the ownership teams of restaurant operators. The company had acquired the 39-unit Mexican concept Uncle Julio’s at a foreclosure auction in late 2024.
