The VinePair Podcast: Bourbon Is Gonna Be Fine

A few months ago, Adam and Joanna had a conversation with Heaven Hill’s co-president Kate Shapira Latts in Louisville, Ky. Throughout that chat, the three continued coming back to the idea that there is too much doom and gloom in the bourbon industry right now. Most of this doom and gloom comes from the fact that people are perhaps unwilling to look at reality and see that the industry actually isn’t doing that badly.

Current markers of how bourbon is performing are based on what happened only a few years ago, which was stockpiling during the Covid era. But if we look at where we’ve been — and Shapira Latts’s family has been in the spirits business since the end of Prohibition — we see that bourbon has experienced peaks and valleys throughout its history. We shouldn’t view this as bourbon’s end time. Will there be a shakeout? Probably. Are there too many startup brands on the market? Also probably. But does that mean the bourbon boom has officially ended and people won’t drink the spirit anymore? Not quite.

Today on the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss influential whiskeys, hunting for sought-for bottles, and other drinks adventures. Then, Adam and Joanna are joined by Kate Shapira Latts, co-president of Heaven Hill Brands, to discuss why so much of the fear-mongering around the future of bourbon is misguided. Tune in for more.
