The VinePair Podcast: The Conversation Around Wine Additives Is Exhausting

A few weeks ago, Fox Business ran an interview with winemaker Charles Smith in which he declares that American wines are chock-full of harmful additives that producers don’t need to disclose on their labels. Because of this alleged “fact,” Smith says he felt compelled to create a wine where the only ingredient used is grapes, and Real Wine was born. Real Wine features one singular ingredient on its label — grapes — but do consumers even care? If a wine tastes good to them and they like it, do they really care if there are any additives? Moreover, isn’t making something branded “Real Wine” damaging to the struggling wine industry at large?

On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach react to a television appearance from Charles Smith discussing the latest iteration of a topic that comes up every so often: that wines in the U.S. can contain a wide range of additives that do not need to be disclosed on the label. Do consumers really care about any of the ingredients or nutritional information of their wine? Would knowing the calorie count on your favorite wine make you change your habits? Tune in for more.
