While Mike Grgich was making his way from communist Yugoslavia to California, a successful attorney from Los Angeles named Jim Barrett purchased Chateau Montelena from Lee and Helen Paschich, a married couple who’d turned the estate into their residence. Soon after, Barrett hired Grgich as head winemaker and, around the same time, Bo Barrett, his 20-year-old son, as the “cellar rat.” As a former vineyard apprentice himself, Grgich took the younger Barrett under his wing to pass along all that he’d learned about vinification.
Today on “Wine 101,” host Keith Beavers continues the story of Chateau Montelena. He dives into the Barretts’ working relationship with Grgich, from farming the vineyard to working the cellar.

“Wine 101” was produced, recorded, and edited by yours truly, Keith Beavers, at the VinePair headquarters in New York City. I want to give a big old shout-out to co-founders Adam Teeter and Josh Malin for creating VinePair. Also, Darby Cicci for the theme song. And I want to thank the entire VinePair staff for helping me learn something new every day. See you next week.
