What I’m Drinking Now: Rudy Corona and the Oaxacan Old Fashioned

Rudy Corona is lead bartender at Fonda del Barrio in San Diego, CA.

We opened Fonda del Barrio in August 2025 to bring ancestral Mexican cuisine back to San Diego and to the vibrant cultural district of Barrio Logan. We brought back the Old School, and the cocktail menu is designed to match the food menu in this effort.

With the Oaxacan Old Fashioned, we went outside the box by including BOTH bourbon and mezcal. Cinnamon is very popular in Mexico, so we felt that flavor was a fit, and the citrus of the orange comes out as you drink it. Burning the cinnamon stick as the finishing step is designed to continue that flavor of the glass a little more.

This is our top-selling cocktail by far, and it is very rewarding to see not just the reactions to the presentation of the drink, but to the taste as well. If you’re making this at home, don’t burn your fingers with the torch!
