The VinePair Podcast: Can the Metric System Revitalize Wine Service?

Most bars and restaurants shell out wine either by the glass or the bottle, but now some are starting to sell it by the… centimeter?

That’s right. A standard wine bottle is 30 centimeters tall, and a handful of establishments have started measuring the empty space in bottles post-pour to calculate what customers owe when they close their tabs. While this newfangled practice might cause drinkers to lose track of exactly how much they’re imbibing, perhaps it adds a layer of fun — and novelty — to the on-premise wine experience. That said, is it actually helping businesses move more wine at the end of the day?

On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach respond to a listener question about restaurants selling wine by the centimeter and other similar measures: Does this make wine service and wine drinking more fun, or is it confusing to guests? Tune in for more.
