Martini Madness is back. Once again, the VinePair team set out to taste 32 of the best Martinis in New York City, pitting them against each other in an NCAA-style bracket to determine which tipple is truly the king of the hill. And there were some interesting findings this time around.
There’s no denying that the Martini is absolutely on fire right now in NYC, with drinkers and diners clamoring to get their hands on the cocktail at bars and restaurants alike. But despite the fanaticism surrounding the drink, most of the specs on menus today differ dramatically from the traditional build. Perhaps it’s because those who want classic Martinis have hyper-specific orders. Instead, bars will offer up inventive takes made with nontraditional ingredients that depart from the classic form. In fact, some of these drinks could only be Martinis in name.
Perhaps they’re less boozy, but aren’t necessarily labeled as a 50/50. Perhaps they’re made with verjus instead of vermouth. They might even come with a sidecar or a crazy, over-the-top garnish. But no matter what, one thing remained of the utmost importance for the VinePair team while tasting this year’s batch of ‘tinis: ensuring that the Martini, no matter how innovative it might be, still drank like a Martini.
On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach gear up for the second-year Martini Madness with a discussion on the hottest Martini trends right now, including riffs that still attempt to be true to the classic stylings, innovative serves, and the rise of the covert 50/50.
