The VinePair Podcast: Will Trump’s Tariffs Tank American Wine Abroad?

Much of the tariff conversation in the drinks industry is centered around price hikes on European wines imported into the U.S. But many aren’t considering another equally panic-inducing impact of the fiasco: the potential hindrance to American wine sales outside the U.S.

In some countries, like Canada, we’ve already seen restaurant operators remove American offerings from their wine lists. And while the U.S. is, of course, the biggest market for American-made wines, the anti-American sentiment bubbling up in other countries could very well derail any momentum the domestic wine industry has gained overseas. It doesn’t help that some of the most popular grapes in the U.S., like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, are also cultivated all over Europe, South America, and beyond, so it’s not like foreign drinkers will have a tough time finding great, non-American-made wines.

On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam and Joanna discuss whether the Trump administration’s trade war and tariff policies will do short-term harm to American wine abroad, and whether that harm might outlast these specific policies and this administration. Tune in for more.
