Del Maguey has been a torchbearer for traditional mezcal for decades. It has introduced the world to the art, nuance, and sheer personality of agave spirits beyond Tequila.
Founded by the late Ron Cooper in 1995, Del Maguey helped redefine how mezcal is made, appreciated, and shared, partnering directly with families of mezcaleros in remote villages and honouring centuries-old, village-specific techniques.
We’re going to walk through the Del Maguey range now, so you can get some perspective on how comprehensive and varied it is. We’ve also got some added incentive. Right now, when you buy qualifying bottles of mezcal*, you could win an exceptionally rare pechuga expression!
All Tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is Tequila. While Tequila is made exclusively from Blue Weber agave and mostly industrially produced, mezcal is an umbrella term for spirits made from any of the 50+ species of agave.
It can also be made using artisanal or ancestral methods, like underground roasting, wild fermentation, and open-air distillation.
You can win this mezcal by purchasing qualifying bottles below
Del Maguey takes these methods seriously. Some of its mezcals fall into classic production categories:
Ancestral – Distilled in clay pot stills using traditional tools like wooden mallets and stone mills, and often fermented in open-air wooden vats.
Artisanal – A step up in scalability, but still rustic. Typically involves copper stills, earth pit roasting, and wooden fermentation tanks.
But some are so unique, authentic, and old school that they go beyond even those definitions. These are classified by the brand as “Village Mezcal”.
Village Mezcal – Del Maguey’s signature approach: single village expressions that highlight unique terroir, traditions, and agave types. Every bottle tells a story.
