Review: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Tanyard Hill Rye

Note: This review of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Tanyard Hill Rye reflects the personal opinions of Editor Kyle Swartz. This bottle was sent to him as a media sample.

Tanyard Hill Rye is a barrel proof Tennessee rye whiskey matured in one of the oldest barrelhouses at the Jack Daniel Distillery, the company says. Tanyard Hill, located next to Coy Hill at the Jack Daniel Distillery, is home to four barrel houses built in the early 1960s. This Tennessee rye whiskey entered new American White Oak barrels in November 2015 and matured in Barrel House 1 atop Tanyard Hill.

Proofs will vary, and mine was 145.9 proof. The suggested retail price is $79.99 per 700-ml. bottle.

Nose

Huge cherry upfront, with dark fruits, sweet oak, and tobacco. Tons of depth and richness in this exquisite nose.

Palate

That big dark cherry note continues onto the palate with dark chocolates, stone fruits, molasses, rye mint, and baking spices. All the tannins you would expect from a hazmat proof, but the cinnamon spice is finely balanced by those bold sweet flavors. Big mouthfeel. A touch of water reveals more cherries and chocolates. An extraordinarily well-made product, no flaws, no negative comments.

Finish

The sweetness lingers and turns into cherry cola, cocoa, tea, and dark char. Big Kentucky hug, or Tennessee hug, whatever you want to call it here.

Upshot

Do keep in mind: Bottles of this single barrel will differ from market to market, so what you buy will not be the same bottle as what was sent to media members. With that said, Jack Daniels in recent years has done a phenomenal job of adapting to modern times by bottling truly top-shelf products. This is another homerun: a big, bold rye with tons of flavor and spice, all woven together in perfect balance. This begs for a cigar. This belongs in your collection. While not on the same sublime level as the first couple Coy Hill releases or JD 14, I would rank Tanyard Hill just behind those all-timers as one of the best bottles to ever come out of Lynchburg, TN.
