Ron del Barrilito, the Puerto Rican rum, has announced the U.S. debut of Don Pedro Fernández Selection III, the latest release in its Autobiografía series of single-cask rums.
Laid to rest in their aging warehouse in 1994, this rum aged for 31 years in a single ex-Oloroso sherry cask.
The release pays tribute to founder Don Pedro Fernández, who studied cognac making in France before returning to Puerto Rico in 1871.
Selection III comes from Cask #3057, one of the rare barrels that survived more than three decades of maturation with quality intact, according to the company. Most casks of this age are either empty from evaporation, or so concentrated they must be blended.
Identified more than 20 years ago by the Fernández family for its exceptional balance and long-term potential, Cask #3057 yielded just 186 bottles after 31 years of aging, according to the company.
“This rum is a reflection of the decades-long marriage between spirit, air, and ex-sherry cask,” says Master Blender Luis Planas. “It delivers a naturally balanced yet complex masterpiece — a glimpse into the beauty and uniqueness of true single-cask aging.”
Each barrel at the distillery is filled and left untouched until bottling — no solera system, no added sugar.
Don Pedro Fernández Selection III is available online and nationally for the suggested retail price of $1,500 per 750-ml. bottle.
While the first two editions of the Autobiografía series were available only at the Hacienda Santa Ana Visitor Center, Selection III marks the first time this series will reach the U.S. market.
Future releases are planned approximately every 12 months, once the prior edition has sold out, each drawn from a different cask.
