During the Gold Rush, a man named Alfred Tubbs migrated west, but it wasn’t the valuable metal that drew him there. It was his entrepreneurial spirit. Along with his brother, Tubbs founded the first roping company in California in 1856, which quickly became the most successful cordage business west of New England. With that wealth, he traveled to France in the 1860s and indulged in European wine culture. Upon returning to California and retiring from the family business, he decided to take winemaking as a new hobby. His vineyard would become Chateau Montelena, one of the most influential wineries in the U.S.
On this episode of “Wine 101,” Keith explores the origins of one of the world’s most iconic wineries, beginning with the journey of a San Francisco entrepreneur and senator who set his sights on northern Napa Valley.
