“Ghost winery” is the industry term for estates that have been abandoned. After its early heyday, Chateau Montelena became something of a ghost winery. Most wineries were forsaken after the onset of Prohibition, but Chateau Montelena pulled back from the wine industry when its proprietors traded winemaking for landscaping. But how did it return to the practice that brought fame to the name?
On this episode of “Wine 101,” Keith delves further into the story behind Chateau Montelena. Listen to how a big-pocketed real estate attorney joins forces with a couple from Calistoga, Calif., to restore a crumbling winery to its former glory.
