The story of California’s rise to winemaking acclaim is a classic, feel-good American tale. Before the wealthy arrived in Napa Valley, blue-collar workers and immigrants populated the region. Then, affluent families trickled in. Napa, and California as a whole soon after, quickly became a melting pot where a blend of ethnicities and tax brackets could coexist. It also proved that a successful wine-producing region could exist in close proximity to a major urban center.
Today on “Wine 101,” Keith wraps up his series on historic American wineries. He shares how the spark in California’s winemaking ignited a culture and industry across an entire country.

“Wine 101” was produced, recorded, and edited by yours truly, Keith Beavers, at the VinePair headquarters in New York City. I want to give a big old shout-out to co-founders Adam Teeter and Josh Malin for creating VinePair. Also, Darby Cicci for the theme song. And I want to thank the entire VinePair staff for helping me learn something new every day. See you next week.
