In the Middle Ages, French knights were sent around the territory to erect and live in fortresses to protect the surrounding land from invasion. These soldiers were referred to as ségurs in Occitan, as they secured the land. As time went on, the knights and their families adopted “Ségur” as a surname.
Ségur clans from north of Bordeaux began trickling down to the burgeoning region after Dutch settlers drained the Médoc in the 17th century, making more land available for purchase. These wealthy military families became landowners in the region and members of its parliament. All the while, the Lafite mound was owned by a parliamentarian — until it fell into the lap of another member of the parliament with the last name Ségur.
Today on “Wine 101,” Keith dives into the backstory of Ségur families and how one of them eventually took ownership of Lafite, the property that would become Château Lafite Rothschild.
