Bitburger Brings Gluten-Reduced Helles Lager to U.S.

German brewer Bitburger has launched Bitburger Gluten-Reduced Helles Lager in the U.S. The beer, which rolled out in Europe in 2020, is now making its debut here in response to growing demand from both consumers and retailers for additional gluten-reduced beer options.

Like all Bitburger beers, Bitburger Gluten-Reduced Helles Lager is brewed at the Bitburger brewery in Bitburg, Germany, which was founded more than 200 years ago. Crafted in the tradition of classic German brewing, the 5.1% ABV beer offers the approachable character of a Helles lager while providing broader drinkability for consumers seeking reduced gluten options, the company says.

Since it’s brewed like traditional beer using barley, the lager is labeled gluten-reduced rather than gluten-free. During fermentation, a special enzyme is added that breaks down gluten proteins, lowering the measurable gluten level. The finished beer is then tested to confirm gluten levels are below 20 parts per million (ppm).

Bitburger Gluten-Reduced Helles Lager will be available beginning in early August in 11.2-oz. cans, sold in 6-packs and cases at participating retailers and beverage outlets nationwide.
