Review: Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series #17: High Angel’s Share

This new expression begins with traditional Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey laid down in 2016. The whiskey rested atop Coy Hill on the top floor of Barrelhouse 1-13 for a high angel’s share maturation. It comes bottle at 138.4 proof, and is available exclusively in TN for the suggested retail price of $44.75 per 375-ml. bottle. I sampled this product and cowrote this review with my friend and colleague David Sokoloff of Modern Distillery Age.

Nose

Spicy cherry cinnamon candies, foreshadowing this whiskey’s predominant flavor. Notes of vanilla bean and barrel house. With more time in the glass, the spice pulls back as lovely tea aromas emerge.

Palate

So much more hot cherry cinnamon candies, but also some juicy Maraschino cherry as well. Notes of dark fruits, tea, and cocoa. Definitely tannic, which should surprise nobody for a whiskey of this proof and age.

Finish

Long and hot, as you’d expect for 130+ proof. Cinnamon and white pepper, as the cherry fades into dark char and burnt chocolate.

Upshot

Jack Daniel’s has been on a role recently with limited-edition releases that impress, and this is no different. Distillery Series #17 is not a Bottle of the Year contender like some of the other one-offs that have rolled out, but is still quite good and worth trying/buying. This is a spicy cherry cinnamon candy bomb, with a bunch of heat that reminds you that you’re sipping something that eclipses 135 proof. Adding a touch of water mutes the cherry spice while bringing forward more of the dark chocolate flavors. An excellent pour that continues to showcase the premium side of Jack Daniel’s.
