The 30 Best Zinfandels for 2026

Though Zinfandel’s rich history reaches back to the vineyards of Croatia, the grape variety has had a massive impact on wine drinking culture in the U.S. Originally brought to California by a Boston ship captain, the Zinfandel grape carried winemakers through the Gold Rush and through the evolution of California wine country. Though Cabernet Sauvignon took over as the variety dominating the conversation around California wine, there are still some producers who embrace Zinfandel as one of the state’s most important grapes.

Because of this history, California boasts a number of hidden pockets of old vine plantings that date back 50 to over 100 years. The wines made from these sites often have the term “old vines” on the label to indicate the grapes were sourced from one of these longstanding plots. On this list, you’ll see families that have been farming this grape for generations, long before Cab was king.

From bottles that showcase Zinfandel’s bold, ripe fruit character to those that feature a more restrained side — plus a few from its original home in Croatia — here are the 30 best Zinfandels to drink in 2026.

Why You Should Trust VinePair

Every year, VinePair conducts dozens of tastings for our “Buy This Booze” product roundups, highlighting the best bottles across the world’s most popular wine and spirits categories.

Within this scope, VinePair’s tasting and editorial staff samples thousands of bottles every year. This ensures we have a close eye on what’s new and exciting. Crucially, it also provides us with the context needed to distinguish the simply good from the truly great, whether from a quality or value-for-money perspective — or both.

Ultimately, our mission is to offer a clear, reliable source of information for drinkers, providing an overview applicable to day-to-day buying and drinking. Learn more about VinePair’s tastings and reviews department here.

How We Taste

We believe in tasting all products as our readers typically would: with full knowledge of the producer and — importantly — price. Our tastings are therefore not conducted blind.

VinePair’s tasting panel evaluates every wine on its aromas, flavors, structure, balance, and quality. We also consider whether or not the wine showed typicity for its specific grape or region.

How We Compiled This List

In order to provide our readers with the most comprehensive and thoroughly tested list of the best Zinfandels to buy, VinePair invited producers, distributors, and PR firms working on their behalf to send samples for consideration. These bottles were submitted free of charge — producers didn’t pay to submit nor did VinePair pay for the products. All were requested with the clear understanding that submission does not guarantee inclusion in the final list.

For the Zinfandel roundup, we assigned a score to each product on a 100-point scale based on the quality and intensity of its aromas, flavors, texture, and finish. Then we reviewed all scores and compiled an editorially driven list that meets our criteria of best Zinfandels to buy right now. Each wine was assessed on quality, price, and availability to compile the final list.

The Best Value Zinfandel

Cline Family Cellars Ancient Vines Zinfandel 2024

This wine comes from a disappearing AVA. Contra Costa Valley is there, but the threat of urban development is real because of its proximity to the San Francisco Bay. For wine historians and preservationists, this land is part of America’s deep wine history. Most of the vines here are 100 to 140 years old, first planted in the mid-19th century. Bottles are on the market right now from vineyards that no longer exist.

Families like the Clines, among others, are trying to keep this vineyard land alive with bottles like the Ancient Vines Zinfandel. It captures the history of how we became a wine-drinking culture and is a worthy purchase to help preserve our viticultural history. The Zin grapes are sourced from a vineyard located on the sandy banks of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with some vines reaching well over 100 years old. The result is a wonderfully concentrated wine, with impressively rich character for its under-$25 price point. It has a savory nose with blackberry and tea notes. It also has a hint of aged balsamic and vanilla bean. The palate is delicious and juicy, with soft fruit supported by medium acidity. This is a wine you should buy a lot of and have on hand to impress your friends with awesome American wine.

The Best Splurge Zinfandel

Matthiasson Old Vine Zinfandel 2022

Last year we dubbed the Gagnon-Kennedy Monte Rosso Zinfandel as the most splurge-worthy. It made this list again this year, and it was a joy to experience the vintage variation. It is still a big, beautiful, powerful Zin. So this year we’re spotlighting a wine of the same caliber, but a completely different style.

Steve and Jill Matthiasson started Matthiasson Wines in Napa in 2003 with the goal of working with sustainable farming practices to make balanced, refined wines in a region more known for its bold, high-ABV wines. And with this Zinfandel, they show a wonderfully light, focused example of the variety.

Grapes for this bottling were sourced from Sonoma’s Armor Plate Vineyard, a dry farmed, organic vineyard that was planted in the 1890s. It is a stunning example of Zinfandel, with crushed wild berries and cured black olives flecked with a light dusting of peppercorns. The palate is a study in balance and restraint, with a soft, elegant mouthfeel that still pronounces its personality, medium fruit depth, and almost perfect acidity. This wine is in complete harmony.

The Best of the Rest:

The Best Zinfandels Under $30

Tortoise Creek Organic Zinfandel 2023

In a rush and need a solid red wine for dinner? This is your bottle. At this price, the variety on the label is often lost to large-scale production. But Zinfandel thankfully refuses to be pushed to the back, with its character coming through loud and clear in this 100 percent varietal wine. It’s easy drinking and balanced. While not the most complex, it gives everything you might want from a casual weeknight wine, with plush fruit, soft tannins, and good acidity.

Sixteen 600 Enrico Valentine 2023

Phil Coturri was farming organically and biodynamically before it was cool, or at least since 1979. This wine blends Zinfandel with a splash of Grenache and Petite Sirah, creating a rich, juicy wine with pops of freshness. There’s clove, cracked black pepper, wild berry jam, and a touch of cinnamon on the nose. It has a soft, rich mouthfeel with an easy tannic frame, letting the fruit and acidity shine.

Basina Tribidrag 2023

Though we know the grape variety as Zinfandel in the U.S., it was historically known as Tribidrag in Croatia. It is peppered with plum and blackberry jam aromas on the nose, with a waft of earth. The palate is wonderful, with a rustic edge tamed by beautiful, expressive fruit. It’s making me hungry just typing this.

Tony Coturri The Founder Series Red Blend NV

This wine is not 100 percent Zinfandel, but this wine is a nod to American wine history, whether owner Tony Coturri intended it or not. (Yes, Tony is brother to Phil of Sixteen 600 above.) This blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, and Grenache is a testament to California’s past field blends. Notably, the wine is a non-vintage bottling, something rarely seen in red wines, incorporating vintages reaching back to 2010. This unique composition creates a layered, complex wine with a mix of notes alternating between fruit and earth with pepper, fresh soil, blackberry jam, and stewed plums.

FAQs

Where is Zinfandel from?

Originally, the Zinfandel grape was from the country of Croatia. DNA profiling in the late ‘90s shows that it has the same genetic makeup of the native Tribidrag grape, also known as Crljenak Kaštelanski.

Where is Zinfandel grown?

Zinfandel as we know it grows mostly on the West Coast of the United States. It is mostly concentrated in the Dry Creek AVA and the Lodi AVA, though it is prevalent across Sonoma County. It can also be found in smaller quantities in Oregon and Washington State.

What is old-vine Zinfandel?

There is no official definition for old-vine Zinfandel but it is generally agreed upon that a vine 50 years or older is considered “old” or “ancient.” Some consider 30 years to be enough. Since there are so many historic sites in California, it’s more common to see this designation on Zinfandel bottlings from the state than other grapes.
