Who Drank the Most Cabernet and Chardonnay in 2021? A Jordan Winery Chart of U.S. Wine Consumption

If there’s one thing we can all attest to after a year like 2020 and 2021, it’s that wine is essential in good times and in bad. Smooth reds and crisp whites may have been the saving grace for most of us. Some say it was the “glue” that held us together and by the looks of our vinous data this year, we can’t argue the sentiment.

With the winter holidays approaching, it’s time to crunch our end-of-year sales numbers. A few years ago, we decided to start sharing this data with our fans. So, in the spirit of fun competition, here’s our latest chart of U.S. wine consumption by state, which ranks who drank the most Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon and Jordan Chardonnay in 2021. Past wine consumption reports for 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016 follow in descending order.

How did your home state do? Did you move up or down in the rankings compared to last year? One of the big winners again this year is New Jersey, which moved up to first place in the most cabernet sauvignon purchased in 2021, stepping ahead of Texas, Florida and our beloved golden state. Texas held their own for another year in chardonnay consumption—they remain in first place, beating out California, Florida, New Jersey and New York. Hawaii impressed us this year as they jumped up almost 10 rankings in most cabernet consumed! Nice one, Hawaii! Tennessee also impressed us as they crept up 11 spots to #16 in most chardonnay purchased this year. Observations on which states had the most significant changes are included in each ranking list, so be sure to see if your home state made a big move.

The figures included are based on total cases sold from January 1-December 13. Thank you for supporting Jordan and making the best out of the last couple years. We look forward to toasting with our fans to celebrate our 50th anniversary next year. Here’s to a bright 2022!

Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon U.S. Wine Consumption by State 2021

Observations from 2020 to 2021: New Jersey swept up in cabernet this year! Beating out Florida, Texas and California, New Jersey made an impressive jump to first place in most cabernet sauvignon purchased this year. Florida stepped ahead of Texas to take silver as California dropped from first to fourth place. We need to step up, CA! Hawaii impressed us with their jump from #28 to #22 this year. Pennsylvania redeemed themselves after a big drop from 2019 to 2020—they jumped 10 places from #39 in 2020 to #29 in 2021. Nicely done, Pennsylvania! The great news: We have our 50th anniversary next year to enjoy Jordan Cabernet all year long.

Observations from 2020 to 2021: California and Florida made a great comeback this year and reclaimed their second and third place crowns from New Jersey and New York. Way to go, sunshine states! Texas held their own this year and kept their first-place title in most chardonnay consumed in 2021. Nevada jumped up from #10 to #7, beating out Colorado, Georgia and Illinois. The biggest movement in the chardonnay chart was Tennessee—moving up 11 places to #16 overall. A fantastic effort, everyone! Let’s see what you got next year.

Observations from 2019 to 2020: California held on to first place whereas Texas and Florida made some impressive moves on the cabernet sauvignon chart. Texas stepped ahead of New York to take second place as Florida surpassed New Jersey and New York to take the bronze medal. Massachusetts took the reigns and jumped ahead two spots from 2019, landing in sixth place. Nevada, Michigan, Minnesota slipped a couple spots on the chart where we saw impressive gains in Utah, Alabama and Arkansas. Pennsylvania took a deep dive from #26 in 2019 to #39 in 2020–we saw similar drops in D.C., Hawaii and Oklahoma. Stay strong, we still have the rest of winter to enjoy a nice glass of cabernet sauvignon.

Observations from 2019 to 2020: Texas and New Jersey are the big chardonnay winners this year. Texas and New Jersey both overthrew California’s crown–moving the golden state down from first place all the way down to third. Impressive work, Texas and New Jersey. And here’s to taking back gold in 2021, California! Florida held strong in fourth place where Massachusetts, Georgia, Colorado, Minnesota and South Carolina rose multiple spots on the chart. Nice job! New York, Nevada, Louisiana, Hawaii and North Carolina slipped in their chardonnay rankings. The good news: We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary vintage of Jordan Chardonnay in August 2021 and it’ll be a summer sipper you won’t want to miss out on.

Observations from the previous year: The battle for runner-up continues, with Texas ousting New York to take back the number 2 spot—which New York took from the Longhorn State in 2018. Nevada and Illinois continue to fight for sixth and seventh place, with Nevada gaining the upper hand this year. Same for Connecticut and Arizona trading the 11th and 12th rankings. Big winners for the year are Tennessee, Utah, Arkansas, Washington and Mississippi, who all jumped several spots in Jordan wine consumption. Virginia, Ohio, Oregon and Washington posted disappointing numbers compared to 2018—each dropped 3-6 spots.  Good thing our 40th anniversary vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon releases in 2020. It’s definitely one to uncork.

Observations from 2018 to 2019: While there were no changes in the top four, Massachusetts moved up to number five, overtaking New Jersey, and Georgia moved to two spots to number 8, knocking Colorado—John Jordan’s home state—back to number 10. Missouri, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, Arkansas, Indiana, Wyoming, Kansas, New Hampshire, Alaska and Vermont also rose multiple spots on the chart. Thank you!  Chardonnay lovers in Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, Minnesota, Alabama, Oregon, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Delaware need to start drinking; your states slipped in the ranking with Alabama and Oregon both dropping seven spots.
