Caol Ila 14 Year Old – Black Friday has landed!

You all know what a big deal Black Friday is these days, a welcome chance to purchase big ticket items at bargain prices and the smart way to do your Christmas shopping. As usual, we have a huge amount of deals and discounts to enjoy today, but this year we’re also delighted to show off our latest exclusive whisky to Master of Malt.

Fans of big, bold, and smoky whisky will really appreciate this release from Islay. It’s a 14-year-old Caol Ila, distilled in December 2008, and drawn from a very cool combo of casks. It’s a marriage of single malts matured in American rye (one cask) and Spanish moscatel casks (three octaves) which was bottled at 48% ABV.

The cult of Caol Ila

Tucked away in one of the most picturesque corners of Scotland, Caol Ila is accessible only by one snaking, single-track road. With its white-painted warehouses and traditional buildings, you might not realise that it is the largest of the Islay distilleries by output, as well as a key part of the Johnnie Walker blend and the go-to for every independent bottler looking to get some smoke and sea into their range. 

But it is that and more, a constantly reliable whisky maker that ensures the fine tastes of Islay are available the world over in many forms. Despite its size and reach, the quality and character of Caol Ila is relentlessly impressive. We always look forward to each new expression that comes our way. You can imagine we’re doubly excited to have one of our own to shout about.

Pierrick Guillaume, former Caol Ila site operations manager, once described the distillery character as such: “Caol Ila is a fruit market in a smoky hall. The perfect entry door to the peaty world. When you take away this gentle peat wrapping the aromas, you are facing a whole range of fruitiness going from exotic notes to richer and darker fruits”.

Caol Ila 14 Year Old – Black Friday tasting note:

A blend of moscatel and rye whiskey casks is not something you see every day, too, so even if you are a Caol Ila buff this is sure to be a new experience for you. It’s also hard to argue with that price tag. Given the serious bang for your buck on this one, we advise you not to hang about, especially as there are only 528 bottles released. Nose: A big whack of rye bread with salted butter kicks things off. Frazzles, biscuity malt, and coastal peat join sticky sweet sultanas, salted peanuts, and almond butter.

Palate: Classic Caol Ila notes of linseed and coastal peat, that nuttiness from the nose rides through, with heaps of dry, salted peanuts, and nut brittle.

Finish: Savoury, bready notes, a touch of rye spice, zesty, candied citrus peels, soft smoke, and honeyed poached fruit.
