Top ten wine and fizz for Mother’s Day 2024

Vilarnau Organic Cava Rosé Gift Pack with 2 x Glasses

Cava is just getting better and better. This organic rosé was made from a mix of two red grapes, garnacha (grenache) and pinot noir and made using the Champagne method to produce a full fruity pink that’s enormous fun – think strawberries and red cherries, and a touch of pastry on the finish – especially in this gift pack with two glasses. Maybe your mum will let you have a glass.

Inniskillin Gold Vidal Icewine 2019

Tremendous 2019 vintage Canadian icewine from Inniskillin! Made with 100% vidal grapes, which are harvested and pressed when they are completely frozen solid, which allows for a more concentrated liquid to be extracted. A deliciously sweet dessert wine which comes in a handy half bottle serving, perfect for polishing off with a nice fruit tart or some blue cheese.

Bollinger Rosé with 2 x Elizabeth Glasses

You’ll really be in her good books when you turn up with a bottle of Bolly Rosé. She’ll be telling all her friends about what a dutiful son/daughter she has to her mahjong group. This superb well-aged Champagne comes with a pair of  tulip-shaped Elizabeth glasses, perfect for appreciating its rich, biscuity flavours.

Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block 2022

The 2022 vintage of cult Cape wine The Chocolate Block is a blend of 74% syrah, 10% grenache, 8% cinsault, 7% cabernet sauvignon and a touch (1%) of viognier grapes. From South African winemaker, Boekenhoutskloof, this is the 20th vintage of The Chocolate Block, producing 3,349 barrels, and it’s as full of berry and cacao character as ever. An excellent pairing for rich, meaty dishes.

M de Minuty Côtes de Provence Rosé 2022

Classic rosé here from one of the best-known names in Provence. This is made from a blend of grenache, cinsault, and rolle (aka vermentino). A taste of summer, this is equally refreshing and delicious during the autumn and winter. Try it with toasted almonds and green olives for a delicious aperitif. It’s also great with richer dishes like ratatouille or roast chicken.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 2022

Hamilton Russell has been making great quality wines in South Africa since 1975. The climate right by the ocean is cool and perfect for growing chardonnay and pinot noir to make wines of great elegance. This 2022 chardonnay is fermented in barrels and aged in a mixture of 228 and 300 litre French oak barrels. Most of them are used so the wood influence is subtle. The resulting wine is rich and fresh and would be superb with a nice Wiener schnitzel.

Lyme Bay Chardonnay 2021

2021 may have been a much leaner vintage than 2020, but Lyme Bay has pulled another stunner out of the bag with its latest chardonnay. As usual this Devon-based winery has sourced the fruit from Essex, the warmest driest part of the country. This is given some oak ageing which gives it a roundness and compliments the zingy citrus fruit. This would be remarkably good with shellfish.

Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2015 Brut Cocoon

All the magic of Perrier-Jouët legendary Belle Epoque cuvee but in an eco-friendly gift box made from paper pulp and vines shoots. So sustainable. Inside is a bottle of one of the best Champagnes on the market making this the perfect gift for an environmentally aware wine lover. Expect flavours of citrus fruit and apple with richer notes of honey, marzipan and toasted croissant, and the most marvellously delicate little bubbles. Fancy!

Bottega Gold Prosecco

You’ve got to have a Prosecco in a Mother’s Day wine round-up. Don’t ask why. We don’t make the rules. And have we got a special bottle for her especially if she’s a Spandau Ballet fan because this bottle is gold. Gold! Always believe in your soul. You’ve got the power to know. You’re indestructible! The contents are pretty gorgeous too with elegant floral notes of orchard blossom, fresh apples and pears with gentle citrus.

Zuccardi Valles Malbec 2019

If your mother loves a rich red then you really can’t go wrong with Argentine malbec especially from a master like Zuccardi. This is packed full of Ripe plums, violets, vanilla and some pungent spicy notes. While steak is the obvious option this versatile wine is equally at home with pasta, aubergines and spaghetti Bolognese.
