Uncle Nearest Acquiring Square One Organic Spirits

Whiskey brand Uncle Nearest continues to branch out: The Shelbywille, TN-based company announced on May 21 that it was acquiring Square One Organic Spirits, maker of the first organic rye vodka brand. 

Under the new partnership, Square One will maintain its commitment to farm-to-glass production and will introduce a new line of organic, gluten-free options designed to appeal to a broader consumer base, the company says. CEO Allison Evanow, who founded the brand in 2004, will continue to play a key leadership role. A rebranding of Square One Organic Vodka, led by The Formulation Group, will be unveiled prior to expanding into all 50 states this summer. 

Uncle Nearest, founded in 2017 by Fawn Weaver, is named after the formerly enslaved man, Nathan “Nearest” Green, who taught a young Jack Daniel to distill. Uncle Nearest last year acquired Domaine Saint Martin, an esteemed Cognac estate with more than 350 years of history. Weaver has said she aims to make Uncle Nearest not just a brand, but the first spirits conglomerate in America founded by a woman or person of color.
