The best white rums to buy right now

The term ‘white rum’ covers a lot of ground, but it is often used by producers, retailers and drinkers as a broad descriptor for rum with no, or very little colour. This can be due to the fact that it hasn’t undergone any cask maturation, or that no caramel colour has been added. However, you can still have colourless rums that have been aged, then filtered afterwards to remove the colour again! Filtration can enhance the texture and flavour of the finished spirit, and also make it more desirable aesthetically – a perfect cocktail ingredient that won’t muddy the waters of your beautiful Daiquiris and the like

There are endless options out there, and these can vary hugely in style and profile, from subtle, elegant molasses-based offerings that will nestle comfortably among other ingredients when mixed, to big, bold, punchy high ester rums, and juicy, funky fresh cane-based Agricoles. If you’re mixing up a cocktail that calls for white rum, your choice of spirit can hugely influence the style and character of your finished drink, so here are a few of my favourites to help you choose wisely!

The best white rums to buy right now

Signature Blend #1 (That Boutique-y Rum Company)

The folks at That Boutique-y Rum Company seriously know their stuff, and this characterful, expressive rum is incredibly versatile – ideal if you’re planning a variety of serves. It’s made with a combination of unaged rum from Martinique and some particularly bold dark rum from Jamaica bringing a beautiful balance of sweetly herbaceous, grassy sugar cane and vibrant tropical fruits. It makes a phenomenal Daiquiri

Doorly’s 3 Year Old Rum

The Doorly’s range is produced at the legendary Foursquare distillery in Barbados, so you can rest assured this is some top-quality rum. This expression is aged for three years before it’s filtered to remove the colour, so you’ll find elegant notes of toasted coconut, oaken vanilla and spice alongside its tropical, fruity core. Again, an excellent all-rounder for all the classic cocktails, or simply splashed in cola or ginger ale with a good squeeze of fresh lime.

Ron Pampero Blanco

Produced in Venezuela, this rum combines light, medium, and heavy spirits produced on a column, kettle batch, and copper pot stills, aged in Scotch whisky casks, then blended and filtered for a rich, rounded character. It’s a solid choice for a whole range of serves, from simple mixed drinks like cola and lime to refreshing Mojitos.

Rum-Bar Overproof

If you’re mixing up a rum punch, you’ll need a drop of some punchy spirits in there! Rum-Bar Overproof is a blend of three unaged pot still Jamaican rums, produced at the Worthy Park Estate and bottled at a mighty 63% ABV. It’s seriously powerful stuff, brimming with bold, funky minerality, peppery spice, and sugarcane sweetness. Try this topped up with Ting, ice, and lime for a delicious simple serve.

O Reizinho (That Boutique-y Rum Company)

Another impressive offering from the Boutique-y gang, this is an unaged Agricole rum from Madeira. It boasts a particularly intense, funky profile, with sweet pressed cane, and a savoury, briny edge that works incredibly well in citrus-forward cocktails, or mixed with other rums in classic tiki serves, and also makes it a fascinating sipper served neat, or with lime and cane syrup in a Ti’ punch.
