Luxury Father’s Day whisky without the luxury price

Some whiskies just taste luxurious, they’re rich, round and smoother than a Basil Rathbone in a cashmere smoking jacket. Just the kind of thing that your dad is going to love for Father’s Day – which is on Sunday 16 June just in case you didn’t know. We have been talking about it quite a bit on the blog.

Basil Rathbone in a smoking jacket

Anyway, luxury whisky! You can spend a lot of money on a luxurious whisky, thousands in fact, but you don’t have to. There are plenty of fancy tasting and looking bottles, because appearances count especially when you’re giving a gift, out there which won’t break the bank.

Here are a few of our favourites below and if you’re still looking for Father’s Day inspiration, go to our Father’s Day gift page

Single malts

Benromach 10 Year Old 70cl

The excellent 10 Year Old expression from the Benromach Distillery (which is opened by Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin who know a thing or two about whisky) is a marvellous single malt, which is matured in a classic combo of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks. Packing plenty of dried fruit, fresh vanilla and smoky notes, it’s approachable but incredibly flavoursome.

The GlenDronach 12 Year Old 70cl

If sherried single malt is very much your father’s thing, then GlenDronach is a name you should get to know very well. This HIghland distillery puts sherry at the heart of its flavour profile. This particular dram, The GlenDronach 12 Year Old, is allowed to age in a combination of oloroso and pedro ximénez casks from Spain, resulting in generous helpings of dried fruit and Christmas spice running through it.

Arran Barrel Reserve Whisky 70cl

And now something a little different, a single malt that majors on a fragrant fruitiness from one of our favourite island distilleries. This is an entirely bourbon-matured bottle of Arran single malt! After its distillation on the eponymous island, Barrel Reserve is matured exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels, bottled at 43% ABV and presented in a very smart bottle.

Luxury blends

Chivas Regal 18 Year Old 70cl

A richly indulgent blended Scotch whisky from longtime favourite, Chivas. The Chivas Regal 18 Year Old was personally created by master blender Colin Scott, including over 20 single malts from around Scotland. A supreme sipper, but also rather good for cocktails if you fancy giving them an upgrade

Timorous Beastie Madeira Cask Finish Whisky 70cl

Douglas Laing’s Timorous Beastie has been given the Madeira cask treatment for this limited edition version. In search of the perfect flavour profile to pair with cheese, this release sees the classic Highland blended malt finished for several months in Madeira fortified wine casks for a sweet, fruity profile that ought to go rather nicely with a spot of goat’s cheese we reckon.

Irish whisky

Waterford The Cuvée 70cl

A fantastic single malt Irish whisky from the Waterford Distillery, following on from its Single Farm Origin series, with further influence from the chateaux of France. The Cuvée brings together spirits from its Single Farm Origin series, allowing for the distillers to create a complex, layered, and altogether harmonious expression. Immensely impressive stuff as ever from Waterford.

Redbreast 15 Year Old 70cl

If your father likes the classic Redbreast 12 Year Old, why not give him an upgrade with this luxurious 15 Year Old version. A beautiful pure pot still whiskey (or “single pot still” as it’s now officially known). Redbreast 15 is a rich, thick, sweet, pungent whiskey with loads of flavour and complexity – really good stuff!

Whisky from around the world

Nikka from the Barrel 50cl

The award-winning Nikka Whisky From The Barrel blend is absolutely full of flavour. Bottled at 51.4% ABV. The blend combines both single malt and grain whisky from the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries, which are then married in a huge variety of casks, including bourbon barrels, sherry butts and refill hogsheads. The bottle also looks very stylish and expensive too. Which is a bonus.

The English – Sherry Butts 70cl

A glorious single malt from The English Distillery over in Norfolk! Distilled in November 2013, this unpeated expression was allowed to mature in sherry butts until February 2022, when a total of 2,850 bottles were released. Norfolk ageing is much quicker than cold Scottish maturation meaning that this is magnificently rich and fruity, with sweet sticky toffee notes, it’s another tasty treat from The English series.

Paul John Brilliance 70cl

Made using Indian 6-row barley from the Himalayan foothills, Brilliance is matured in bourbon barrels for 3-5 years before bottling at cask strength. Tropical climate causes greater evaporation, around 12-13% a year which means Paul John whiskies show very well at a younger age. The result is a whisky packed with sweet chocolate and toffee balanced by refreshing orange peel notes.
