The VinePair Podcast: Do People Really Care About the Color of Their Red Wine?

Mega Purple is an additive grape concentrate primarily used by large-scale wineries and some high-end estates to tint their wines a more luxurious, deep-red hue. Robert Parker’s influence made it conventional for an inky look — attained through the use of Mega Purple, which doesn’t affect flavor — to be the signifier of a prestigious bottle. But as light-style — either the result of thin-skinned varieties like Pinot Noir or reduced maceration periods — and chillable reds grow in popularity, some winemakers are considering whether they should continue to strive for a bold-looking, nearly opaque liquid.

Today on the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss whether wine drinkers still search for a deep, inky color when purchasing red wine. Do brands and producers no longer have to rely on Mega Purple and other additives to make their products seem appealing?
