As cocktail competitions continue to evolve, the focus has shifted from technical perfection to something broader—creativity, storytelling, and connection. The Bols Cocktail Battle leans directly into that shift, offering bartenders a platform that extends well beyond the bar.
We caught up with Ignacio Llaneza, Vice President of Marketing for the U.S. and Canada at Lucas Bols, to learn more.
Bols Cocktail Battle is about giving bartenders a platform to express their creativity on a national—and ultimately global—stage.
It starts with Discovery Events across the U.S., designed to showcase the full Lucas Bols portfolio—not just Bols liqueurs, but a broader range of flavors, formats, and brands that bartenders can work with behind the bar. From there, entries are submitted through Difford’s Guide website, and we move through regional selection—East and West—toward two U.S. winners.
Beyond the competition itself, it’s a real visibility platform, with finalists and winners featured across Chilled Magazine, Difford’s, and Bols social channels. And for us, this builds on the momentum from last year—celebrating our 450th anniversary with the launch of Bols Blue 1575 and a takeover at Tales of the Cocktail—continuing to invest in the bartender community in a meaningful way.
“Neon Nights” is about energy—cocktails that are vibrant, expressive, and visually striking.
Today, drinks don’t just need to taste great—they need to be shared. We’re seeing a clear shift toward cocktails that are designed to stand out, be photographed, and be shared.
Neon is a natural reflection of that—drinks that are bold, memorable, and built for social occasions.
Rather than a direct competition between regions, the East and West structure allows us to spotlight talent across the country. We’ll have finalists and ultimately one winner from each region, ensuring we capture a broader range of styles, influences, and perspectives across the U.S. bartending community.
Bols has been supporting bartenders globally for years through competitions and education, particularly through the Bols Cocktail Academy.
More recently, we’ve combined that with cultural moments—like our 450th anniversary and the launch of Bols Blue 1575, which we brought to life through a takeover at Tales of the Cocktail.
Across the industry, competitions have become a key way for bartenders to gain recognition, and we’ve been proud to be part of that evolution.
It’s what we call the “Cocktail Fever” experience. Winners travel to Amsterdam and connect with bartenders from around the world for a fully immersive program centered around the House of Bols and the Bols Cocktail Academy. They also get to visit the Bols Distillery and meet Bols Master Distiller and The Bols Academy team.
It’s hands-on, it’s collaborative, and it’s designed to inspire—whether that’s through tasting, workshops, or simply being immersed in one of the world’s most creative cocktail cities.
Amsterdam is where Bols was founded in 1575, so it’s where our story begins.
But what makes it meaningful for bartenders is that it’s not just history—it’s a city where cocktail culture continues to evolve. You see how tradition and innovation coexist, which is exactly the balance bartenders are navigating today.
A deeper understanding of flavor—how to build balance, how liqueurs shape a cocktail, how small adjustments change the entire experience.
But beyond that, it’s perspective. It’s stepping outside your day-to-day environment and coming back with new ideas, new techniques, and a stronger point of view. They will also get to meet amazing bartenders from around the world, learn from each other, and build lasting relationships that can benefit their bartending careers.
Think of it as a flavor toolkit.
Bols is designed to give bartenders precision and flexibility—whether you’re building a classic, creating something highly visual, or scaling a cocktail for service. The liquids are consistent, vibrant, and built for performance behind the bar.
At the same time, they deliver a level of quality comparable to many super-premium liqueurs, while allowing operators to manage cost more effectively—ultimately supporting stronger margins without compromising the guest experience. And importantly, that extends beyond liqueurs—the broader Lucas Bols portfolio gives bartenders a complete system to work across occasions and formats.
All of it—but it must connect.
The strongest entries are the ones where everything feels intentional—the flavor, the visual, the story. When those elements align, the drink stands out immediately.
Just go for it.
There’s a lot of upside—visibility, experience, and the chance to challenge yourself. Even being selected as a finalist puts your work in front of the industry in a meaningful way.
They’re more relevant than ever. As cocktails become more experiential and visually driven, liqueurs are playing a bigger role in delivering color, aroma, and differentiation.
That’s exactly what we leaned into with Bols Blue 1575—bringing a modern, premium expression of an iconic category into today’s cocktail culture. That combination of flavor, visual impact, and commercial efficiency is what makes them so relevant for today’s operators.
Clarity. When a cocktail has a clear idea behind it—and every element supports that idea—it stands out right away.
Because it’s a real opportunity to be seen. This is a platform that connects you to the broader industry—locally and globally—and gives you the chance to share your perspective in a meaningful way.
