While California Pinot Noir isn’t new, Meiomi Pinot Noir proves that it can still be exciting. The Meiomi winemaking process artfully combines skill and intuition, drawing from the unique terroir of their vineyards throughout California wine country. The result is a remarkable wine that is “blue fruit”-forward (think blueberry and blackberry) with well-balanced notes of baking spices. As Jason Becker, Meiomi winemaker, explains, “All of these different regions, such as Monterey Bay, San Benito County, Santa Barbara County, and Sonoma County, bear fruit that allows us to select some of the finest grapes. Each contributes something distinct to the final blend.”
In this video, Meiomi winemaker Jason Becker guides Adam Teeter, co-founder of VinePair and host of The VinePair Podcast, along with NYC-based sommelier Elle Roberts, through the intricate process that brings Meiomi’s vision of Pinot Noir to life. Becker emphasizes that experience plays a crucial role in this vision, combining time-tested techniques that bring the final product to life.
A key aspect of Meiomi’s approach is their method of removing the juice from the skins earlier in the process. “It allows us to make the wines we want without all the tannin behind them,” says Becker. “Once I have all the wines made, I can look at every single one individually and decide how to bring the best to the blend.”
During the tour, Elle Roberts leverages her expertise as a professional sommelier to help viewers appreciate and understand all that goes into a glass of Meiomi. She describes Meiomi as a subtle yet affordable luxury that embodies the true essence of California winemaking.
“It’s a bit of a challenge that I quite enjoy,” Becker adds. “It’s made by somebody who cares.”
