The 3 Drink Orders That Instantly Earn a Bartender’s Respect

Bartenders can learn a lot about a guest from a single drink order. A belly-up-to-the-bar order can reveal whether you are dealing with someone who just saw an influencer making a cocktail on TikTok or someone who genuinely appreciates what’s in the glass and the skill that goes into making it.

While ordering a hyper-niche amaro or a funky natural wine is a classic industry handshake, there are certain cocktail orders that command immediate respect. They aren’t flashy, but they require a steady hand to make, a balanced palate to appreciate, and a baseline knowledge of cocktail history to order in the first place.

To find out which order acts as the ultimate insider nod, we turned to our Chilled Ambassadors—a nationwide network of working bartenders who live on the front lines of nightlife.

We asked: Which drink order tells you a customer truly knows what they’re doing?

Here is exactly how they voted

Sazerac: 44%
Daiquiri: 34%
Last Word: 16%
Negroni: 4%
Corpse Reviver No. 2: 2%

No groni?

Interestingly, the internet’s favorite bitter-sweet crush, the Negroni, barely registered with our bartenders at just 4%. While it’s long been considered an industry staple, its mainstream explosion might have diluted its “insider” status. If literally everyone is ordering a Negroni on a Friday night, it no longer acts as a secret password. Meanwhile, the Corpse Reviver No. 2 pulled a tiny 2%—proving that while a beautifully balanced, absinthe-rinsed gin sour is a great call, it’s maybe a bit too specific of a mood.

The Last Word, like a Mic-Drop

Clocking in at 16%, The Last Word remains a rock-solid indicator of a savvy drinker. It’s an equal-parts cocktail, sure, but it’s completely unforgiving. Green Chartreuse and Maraschino liqueur are loud, assertive, and expensive spirits that can easily derail a drink if the bartender’s specs are even slightly off, or if the guest doesn’t know what they’re getting into. If someone orders a Last Word, they aren’t just looking for a buzz, they’re looking for a very specific, herbaceous tightrope walk.

The Daiquiri is Still the Ultimate Litmus Test

Taking more than a third of the vote (34%), the Daiquiri remains the definitive bartender’s cocktail. We’re talking no blenders, no artificial strawberry syrup, just rum, lime, and sugar. It is the ultimate test of a bar’s execution because there is nowhere for bad ice, poor balance, or cheap rum to hide. When a guest orders a classic, shaken Daiquiri, they are subtly checking bartender technique. Order one of these, and the staff instantly knows you appreciate the beauty of raw simplicity.

The Sazerac is the Undisputed Heavyweight Champ

Pulling in a massive 44% of the vote, is the Sazerac. New Orleans’ official cocktail is a masterclass in nuance, and it truly requires a lot of patience from both sides of the bar. Between the split-base debates (rye vs. cognac), the explicit need for Peychaud’s bitters, the express-and-discard lemon peel, and that crucial, aromatic absinthe rinse, ordering a Sazerac tells the bartender: I know exactly what goes into this, I know it takes a minute to prep, and I want a stiff, meticulously crafted drink.

It’s a drink that demands serious beverage literacy. So, if a guest orders a Sazerac, clear a spot on the bar, they know precisely what they’re doing!
