Family ties have long been integral to the tequila industry. Some of the world’s greatest agave spirits come as a result of multiple generations passing down the traditions and techniques of tequila making. Many brands receive that savoir-faire from just one family — but for Don Fulano, the knowledge of two long-standing tequila families informs the process.
Co-founders Enrique Fonseca and Sergio Mendoza founded Don Fulano in 2002. Sergio is a fourth-generation agave farmer, distiller, and blender, and Enrique is a fifth-generation agave. Together, their wealth of knowledge and commitment to artisanal practices established one of the most celebrated modern tequila brands.
Today on the “VinePair Podcast,” Sergio joins Adam to discuss his family’s long history in the tequila business, how he and Enrique launched their brand, and what it’s been like living through the tequila boom.
