In 18th-century Bordeaux, when members of the parliament passed away, their sons would assume the administrative role. As such, after Alexandre de Ségur — member of the Bordeaux parliament and proprietor of the Lafite estate — died in 1716, his son, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, inherited both his spot in the government and the land. Winemaking at Lafite had begun before his father’s passing, but once he took the helm, Nicolas saw its potential to become a luxury winery. To do so, he restructured the land, altered the vinification process, and rebranded Lafite into a winery that targeted the elite members of 18th-century French and British societies.

Today on “Wine 101,” Keith dives into the story of Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and his effect on building Château Lafite Rothschild. He explains how Nicolas expanded his father’s work and how it led him to eventually be known as “Prince of the Vines.”
